Holistic facials
Holistic facials are a fantastic way to unwind. No one in their right mind would object to soothing aromatherapy oils and a fantastic face massage, but sometimes our skin just needs a little boost from technology for results to be noticeable.
With a never-ending supply of high-tech facial treatments on the market, it can be difficult to know which one is best for your skin. Some of the most effective supercharged facial treatments include LED light therapy, microdermabrasion, oxygen, and high frequency. In this piece, we’ll take you through these tech-forward facial treatments and find out which one suits your skin type.
1. Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, painless technique that works by two methods: either highly pressurized crystals are fired against the skin, or a crystal-tipped wand swiped across your skin. A vacuum is then applied to the skin to remove all dead skin cells, impurities, and leftover particles.
Microdermabrasion is deeply exfoliating but still a very gentle procedure compared to traditional dermabrasion. Many facials incorporate microdermabrasion as part of their exfoliation. It can help boost circulation, reduce the size of pores, and help skin care products absorb better. It also helps with discoloration and brown spots.
Best for: Brown spots, signs of aging, and dull or uneven looking skin tone.
Not Recommended for: Acne-prone, sensitive skin.
2. LED treatments
A favorite amongst celebrities, LED therapy is a proven anti-aging technique. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, which refers to a machine that emits infrared light in different wavelengths and spectrums. The therapeutic light works by reaching the cells in our dermis, where that energy is then converted into adenosine triphosphate. ATP is the fuel that cells need to carry out their functions, so more fuel means greater cell turnover.
Different wavelengths provide different skin care benefits. Amber light helps give our fibroblast cells all the fuel they need to produce more collagen and elastin – the same cell production rate we had when we were 25 and under. Other lights include blue, which kills bacteria, red for promoting circulation, and white light for tightening the skin and reducing inflammation.
Best for: Aging skin, dull and uneven skin tone, acne.
Not recommended for: Weekly LED light therapy is safe for almost all skin types.
3. Oxygen Facials
During an oxygen facial, oxygen is delivered to the skin with a high-pressure wand. Often, skin is cleansed, steamed and exfoliated beforehand to ensure adequate penetration of the oxygen. Some facial systems apply products such as hyaluronic acid before letting the oxygen work the high-tech skin care products in more effectively.
During the procedure, you’ll feel cool, mild shots of air released all over your face. Oxygen facials are not in any way uncomfortable, but you shouldn’t expect them to be as relaxing as an aromatherapy facial massage. An oxygen facial is more of a medical, results-oriented approach for achieving rejuvenated looking skin.
Best for: Anyone with poor blood circulation, dark circles, aging skin, as well as smokers.
Not recommended for: Oxygen facials are suitable for all skin types.
4. High Frequency
High-Frequency Machine employs an oscillating circuit that creates a current that kills bacteria and reduces inflammation. The tool is a stick with a flat, bubble-like piece on the end (which is the electrode). When applied to the skin, it excretes argon gas while emitting a small electrical current. The zaps don’t hurt, but you can feel a mild zing on your skin as the wand works its magic by killing acne-causing bacteria and reducing inflamed skin.
Best for: High-frequency technology is suited to be people who suffer from acne, cystic acne, and other inflammatory skin conditions.
Not recommended for: High-frequency facials are safe for all skin types.
5. Enzyme Peels
Enzyme peels are not the most technical of treatments, but they’re best left in the hands of a professional esthetician. Enzyme peels help hasten the process of skin regeneration by accelerating the chemical reactions needed for new skin cells to come to the surface. Enzyme peels will also help the skin shed old and dead cells more easily.
Enzyme peels allow for faster and more effective exfoliation without the abrasiveness that some strong exfoliative products have. Enzyme peels help reveal plump, new skin and can even penetrate the skin and shrink pores while improving all-over skin texture.
Best for: Enzyme peels are great for scars, discoloration, age spots, and fine lines.
Not recommended for: Extremely dehydrated or sensitive skin
